The Extended Essay (EE) is a core part of the IB Diploma Programme, alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). It gives students the chance to explore a topic they care about and develop valuable research and writing skills.
What is it?
- An independent research project on a question chosen by the student.
- The topic comes from one of the student’s IB subjects.
- Students write a formal academic essay of up to 4,000 words.
How does it work?
- Each student is supported by a teacher-supervisor who guides them through the process.
- Research and writing take place over several months.
- Students are responsible for planning and managing their time.
