Extended Essay

The Extended Essay (EE) is a core part of the IB Diploma Programme, alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). It gives students the chance to explore a topic they care about and develop valuable research and writing skills.

What is it?

  • An independent research project on a question chosen by the student.
  • The topic comes from one of the student’s IB subjects.
  • Students write a formal academic essay of up to 4,000 words.

How does it work?

  • Each student is supported by a teacher-supervisor who guides them through the process.
  • Research and writing take place over several months.
  • Students are responsible for planning and managing their time.

What do students gain?

  • Skills in research, critical thinking, and academic writing.
  • Experience managing a long-term project.
  • Preparation for the kind of work expected at university.
  • Increased confidence, independence, and perseverance.
“The EE is more than just an essay — it’s a journey of discovery that helps students grow as thoughtful, self-directed learners.”
